A Canadian Thanksgiving

Well it's December, and I have the blogging bug. Youtubers have vlogmas where they vlog everyday, so I guess I can have blogmas. I will not blog everyday, but hopefully 12 times this month. Today I bring you my Thanksgiving holiday to the place that was not currently celebrating Thanksgiving.

I usually stay at school for the break but this year we are having Christmas here in Utah so I got to go home. I spent the week at my home mostly, but got to go Black Friday shopping, out to eat, and to four appointments. I had car problems two days in a row, and did I mention the temperature got to at least -20F? Remember how I had six full winters like that? How did I survive? Well I got to spend time decorating for Christmas and cozying up watching Christmas movies. I love being home and I miss my big bed, my puppy, and my family already. (I also love the Vitamix, wish u were closer 2 me.)

Halloween

I came up with my Halloween costume on Tuesday night, just a few days from Halloween. I've gone through about 10 different costume ideas but since I had no concrete party plans I never followed them through. I still didn't have any plans, but I got so excited about it didn't matter. I've been watching Gilmore Girls this month since it came out on Netflix. I realized dressing up as Rory in her Chilton uniform would be perfect.

Step one was finding the skirt. I looked at nearly every clothing website I could think of. I finally found the perfect one at Lands End and quickly ordered it with rush shipping. I got the supplies to make saddle shoes based off of this tutorial and also made the necktie out of navy ribbon and a button. I had the shirt and blazer so with some knee high socks from Target and straightened hair, I channeled my inner Rory.

It's the best month of the year everyone!



 It's October. It's time for the glorious decaying leaf smell, a chilly breeze, sporty casual wear, comfy sweaters, basic girl heaven, and also the birthday month of this opal stone libra. I'm so excited about October, and having Gilmore Girls be unleashed on Netflix today is the icing on the pumpkin spice cake. (Speaking of Gilmore Girls, I just so happened to be inspired to start a GG themed tumblr. It's not customary to reveal your tumblr identity I've been told but oh well.)

Lazy

Sitting on the couch all afternoon on my laptop doing nothing special is like the best part of my day. Why? Can you imagine what it would be like to have school or work being the best part of your day? (Meaning productive work is your favorite thing, not as if school or work is the only good thing you have in your life.)

First, a disclosure. I have named this part of the internet "The Megazine" with the intention of emulating what you found find in a magazine. Let's label this type of post "free form question in short journal entry form."

I have lofty goals of having a personal schedule running like clockwork everyday. I wake up early after going to be early, have time to exercise, shower, get ready for school, read my scriptures, make breakfast, gather snacks and plan for lunch. If only life was perfect and discipline came as easy as procrastination. Since this plan has not come to fruition so far, I just have to do what I can.

I love learning new productivity tips even though at the same time you are admitting to yourself that you are currently doing things wrong. If I try to narrow down just three things I would like to change it would be as follows:

1. Schedule study time and stick to that schedule
2. Go to bed and wake up earlier
3. Meal plan
and I can't help it 4. Work out in the morning three times a week

That about covers all of my goals- see how I did that?

On another note, do you read horoscopes? I found the Free People Blog horoscopes about a month ago, and every week it's as close to accurate stars and planets can be.
How can I say no to handwritten illustrations like that?

I guess I'll attempt to tackle my linguistics reading and statistics test studying. Until next time!

Insert another way to say "word vomit"

{None of this is required to follow proper grammar flow and language rules.}

Oh blog it feels good to be home. I finally got the Adobe Creative Suite subscription so I can get going on my blog design. When I though of the name of my blog it was as if the windows to heaven opened and I was like "yes, that's the one." I'm currently reading "Where'd You Go Bernadette" and if only I could write in that satire.

On the subject of that book, here's a quote that I hope applies to me:
"People like you must create. If you don't create, Bernadette, you will become a menace to society."

I'm like everyone else when I say that I don't want to be like "the others." Say blogging for instance. What new things could I present that are any different from what is out there already? This has stopped me from working and writing on my blog before. So I'll have to change my approach. This blog is for me to enjoy and for you to get on board. What I'm getting at is when it comes to creativity, I love it, and I'm okay with admitting that I'm just another 20 year old girl who identifies with being able to cook, sew, paint, graphic design, write, sing, dance, act, and shop. Working on these different skills brings me worth and something different to my day. I'd like to spend more time on these things in the midst of school and other obligations. With that comes more time spent on my blog.

What also stops me is my lack of good photos, but I'll use what I have. If I can't get good photos, then I'll just write more.

I started out with more energy at the beginning of this post than I have now. You pay the price for late nights with your girlfriends. What I hope you get out of this word vomit is hello, welcome back, welcome to my brain, and stick around.

Luck


First of all, thank you to everyone who has read my last post and supported me in telling my story. I have more up my sleeve to say so keep coming back. I have read so many kind words that fill me up like a hot-air balloon, (but not in like a conceited way like I'm full of hot air.) All I can say is thank you and Ellen style "RIGHT BACK AT CHA."

Conveniently enough, I had my check-up with my psychiatrist at the hospital yesterday. I came away feeling very optimistic about my situation. Foremost being that I'm finally able to switch up my medication after being stable for so long. For those interested in these minor details I'm not taking divalproex any more and upping the lithium to 2 pills a day. The superficial side of me is most excited about not having the side effect of weight gain. That epival in combination with living in the dorms second semester really did a number on me. I was excited about the change, and then I woke up this morning after taking my first new dosage and felt the beautiful grogginess, dizziness, and even muscle twitches lithium brings. I'm sure I'll get used to it but I had to take a day off of driving and work.

My psychiatrist is awesome. I really lucked out. I got to ask him all my latest questions and he gave me good advice and even counsel. He told me (knock on wood) that he's really happy with my progress and condition. He also told me twice about how so many people in my exact situation live very successful lives with families and careers. I've always felt like I'll be able to accomplish (well definitely not all the time, but hoped) whatever I've wanted to do, but hearing it really gave me a boost. I'm also able to count my blessings because there are also many people who even take their medication regularly but are constantly in and out of the hospital. I'm blessed with current wellness and an amazing support system. I have it easy.

I also got to visit my loving therapist. I always benefit from talking about myself for an hour straight, you should try it. I also got to get my haircut by my go-to #1 lady who I love so much (my best friend's mom) so all in all a very successful day.

After my first appointment at the hospital, I took a short walk outside. The hospital is in a gorgeous location on the reservoir, and the unit I stayed in is right in the front with the view. I could see one of my old rooms from outside and walked down the trail that I frequented that leads to the shore.





I'm one lucky girl. Oh and please indulge me in a selfie in the parkade which just enough blinding noon sun to even out that complexion and make my hair color crazy (get it a psych ward visit) good.

Pills and Problems

A big reason why I wanted to start blogging again (as in creating a new blog and not necessarily my blogging again after a month) was to have a place on the internet where I could share my thoughts about mental health and mental illness. With Robin Williams passing away yesterday and the aftershocks, I can say that a blessing out of this is the chipping away at the stigma behind mental illness. Everyone is talking about it and it seems to be the consensus that "you should not be ashamed, there is help available for you if you are struggling."

I talked a little bit about my own experience with my own illness, bipolar disorder, on my old blog but I've never gone very in depth. I think I will over time. I've been diagnosed for almost four years come September. Part of me embraces this part of my identity, and the other part feels completely trapped. I'm stuck with it for the rest of my life, unless science keeps working and miracle drugs appear in the future. My main struggle is manic episodes, which have happened four times in varying degrees of severity.

The facts are these:

Episode I: March/April 2010

I was on my second or third round of Accutane which had helped clear up my severe acne but also could have been the trigger to cause my first episode and following diagnosis. I remember reading that the drug can cause this to happen if you have a genetic inclination to the disorder (which I'm pretty sure I do.) I was in 10th grade and pretty much all of a sudden my energy skyrocketed. I had struggled for a few years with a range of anxiety, and for the first time in a long time I felt free from the pressure. I had so many new creative ideas and I was connecting with the world in a brand new and wonderful way. I definitely did not want it to end. But eventually I started to notice that the people around me were not on the same page. I have kept a catalogue of what were then inhibiting and exciting experiences to what became my long list of embarrassing moments. I would definitely say that one of my biggest struggles with the illness is embarrassment and knowing that I upset the people around me.

Episode II: August 2010

The aftermath of episode I was mostly confusion, and my mood stabilized again and we just seemed to move on slowly from it. August came and with it the winds of change as I was going in to a new school year. My mood peaked again, just in time for my only sister's wedding. It was a busy and stressful time as my whole family was staying in our house, I went to the Michael Bublé concert two nights in a row with my generous best friend, and an amazing girl's camp was all squeezed into a period of five days. I could obviously not sleep very much because of the general excitement and the surging chemicals in my brain were not helpful. The wedding turned out really wonderful and my family's visit, but I hate knowing that I was "acting crazy" for most of the time. Isolation goes hand in hand with any illness, but no one can be in your mind at the same time as you and know exactly what is happening and how you are feeling. After tests and interviews with my parents and myself, I was officially diagnosed with bipolar disorder, just in time for a brand new year of high school.

I was episode free for almost two years. I only was taking a small dosage of sedative at night to make sure that I was getting a full night's sleep. I fairly regularly was going to visit my therapist/counselor and was the token patient with smooth sailing and little to report. Then, frankly, my brain exploded.

Episode III: May 2012

Senior year was coming to an end. I had starred in a play about Starbucks, gone on my dream trip to San Francisco with all my friends and choir, gone on another dream spring break with my two best friends to Phoenix, and was in the midst of planning a killer grad party and my last rounds of tests and classes. A brief explanation to help shed light on maybe what in the world my brain was up to: I've never been in a relationship, been asked to a dance, held hands, kissed a boy, or anything. I've had some guy friends and a big friend group that we would double date with. I've always been a romantic and dreamed of the day a boy would like me back. But as my mom would try to reassure me, "you're just a big fish in a small pond" meaning that maybe there weren't that many boys around that would be good for me to date, and patience can help.

Back to the story, while my brain was churning with all of the exciting changes soon coming my way with graduation, my mind latched onto the idea that I was in love with a boy in my English class and that oddly enough he liked me too. Before my brain started taking over, I would talk to him when he was talking to my friends because they knew him, but nothing really because I barely knew the guy. But my love starved heart combined with a brain that now desperately needed adult medication added up to an infatuation. Everything began to revolve around this "romance that I've invented" (in the words of Mother Gothel from Tangled). I skipped the year end choir concert because I was hanging out in my car in the school parking lot. I wasn't just hanging out, I was expecting a grand romantic gesture that should have come my way. I'm trying to somehow explain everything else that I had come up with, but I can't. I wasn't just falling in love, I was also becoming famous. One day I will try to go into detail as to how amazing I thought my life was becoming, but there's time for that later. Things kept escalating and my anxiety and desperation grew as fast as my family and friend's worry. After a series of unfortunately hilarious antics, I was being escorted to the emergency room via police car (not because I had broken any laws but because I called 911 on my sister because she was trying to protect me and not letting me leave the house when I was trying to get out out of the house) (I love my sister very much and she was doing what she thought she could do to help me.) When I got there I had no idea that it would be two and a half weeks until I would leave. I could write an entire novel on my experience there because it does hold a special place in my heart. But know that I left with 900 mg of lithium a day in hand and went back to high school.

Good thing I was still in a daze and heavily medicated otherwise I would've been mortified. Thinking about how uncomfortable I must have made that poor fellow haunts me to this day. Just knowing that someone is unfamiliar with level headed me just makes me feel defeated. But on the bright side I made it to graduation, passed all my exams, and started BYU in the fall.

Episode IV: January 2013
Fortunately, this is a mini episode but still has repercussions. When I went home at Christmas time we switched up my medication cocktail. I slowly transitioned off lithium to divalproex, or Epi-val. My first semester, lithium really weighed me down. I had a real difficult time with reading comprehension and concentration, and with just starting college that was not helpful. I went back to Utah and had several serendipitous running into's with a guy that I grew to believe could be perfect for me. With just a little degree of allowance my end of lithium offered, I was swept off my feet into another one-sided romance. Luckily, my family caught on and I was reigned in with the help of a psychiatrist in Utah as well as collaborating with my psychiatrist that is back home. I was put back on lithium and then moved to 2 epival/1 lithium a day that I have now taken everyday for a year and a half. Good thing was I got to stay in school and my life was not completely interrupted. Bad news was that the guy was a good friend of my brother's and I'm afraid I made an off putting impression on those in my new dorm.

It's been a year and a half since my last episode, but I still deal with my illness everyday. I've gone into some detail about the manic stages of bipolar. My certain kind of bipolar disorder favors the manic highs and I have not yet experience severe lows, of which I am grateful. But every couple weeks I'll have a rough night and accompanying journal entry full of self pity, but usually when I wake up after a good nights rest I can come back and have a better day. Sometimes it carries on for a few days, but it evens out again.

Again I'd say my biggest struggles are my feelings of deep embarrassment and shame of my actions while manic. The complicated thing is that I am not ashamed of my choices because while I was making them, they felt right and exciting, and were fueled behind an every growing anxiety that my communication was failing with those around me. I also feel for my parents and friends who were so worried, nervous, and sometimes scared for and of me. What is hard to reconcile is that I can say "oh I was just manic and I didn't mean what I said while I was high" but what I did say and do was a conscious decision and is part of who I am. I can never distance myself from the disorder because it's part of me. What I hope to do is to be fully able to forgive myself and not have a pit in my stomach when I remember the details of those days. My problem is that I have always been playing very close attention to my relationships and the feelings of those around me that when those around me think I am crazy and weird and scary it is one of the worst feelings in the world. I just hope that those people who saw me then will be able to see through to what was really happening and know that I am sorry that they were stuck in the crossfire.

It's as simple as that. I did not expect to write this much tonight, but whenever I write or speak about what I've been through and am going through, it makes things that much more manageable. I hope in the wake of a tragedy caused by mental illness, we can continue to fight for those who struggle and fight to become educated allies. People have suffered and will continue to suffer, but things are easier when you are not alone. Though I'm stuck with an illness, I have hope and I work to be kind to myself, and more understanding towards others.

4th of July



July 4th was pretty mild as per usual in celebrating in Canada, but the best part was our family BBQ. We ate hamburgers, festive fruit kebabs, cherry ho-ho, lemonade; all the good stuff with our family and friends. I had to work most of the day and so our gathering was the real highlight. I was sad to miss the real big festivities that happen in Provo, but I know eventually one day I will be able to! But I do love all of these people and dressing in red, white and blue and celebrating together was a special occasion indeed.

Today was my first day of work at my new summer job. I'm working as a laborer for my dad's construction company. Today I just swept for hours, picked up garbage, spray painted and made some new friends as you can see above. If you'll excuse me, I'll be passing out after a first day of 8 hours manual labor.

Mosquitos Suck

One night this week I was outside for about two minutes. In that time I managed to get a mosquito bite right on top of my knuckle. You could say mosquitoes are my fangirls; they can always find me.

With one quick search on Pinterest for mosquito bite relief, I found dozens of ways that claimed to work. Looking at this photo, can you guess which one worked?

Ice cube: supposed to stop the bite from spreading, decent

Spoon held under hot running water then applied: also decent

Glue stick: I haven't tried this yet, but supposedly you're supposed to put glue on top and you'll avoid scratching? Hmm..

Lavender oil: always good for anything

Throat spray: Put some on a cotton ball and apply to bite. Another decent option.

Oil of Oregano: the winner! My mom had gotten this for me for my sore throat, but I put a drop on top of the bite and within a few hours the bite was almost gone. The next morning, the itchiness had started again but I put more on. All I'm saying is that this is the best method so far!

Yo, Canada

Here's my version of the Canadian tuxedo.
Happy Canada Day from this permanent Canuck. This August will mark eight years of my family living in Canada. People always ask me, "So which place do you like better? Canada or the US?"
I can honestly say that I love both. I love living in the States most of the year, and I love coming home to Canada. I ended up loving going to a Canadian high school and I love the people hear. Plus, it's gorgeous and I can't wait to visit more of the country.

I can't forget my favorite Canucks! Randy is actually Canadian and Melissa is also in possession of the long awaited permanent resident card.

In honor of this day, I'll post the top Buzzfeed articles as of late about Canada, the US and Canada, what people think of Canada, etc.

What would happen if you tried to label Canada? I think I could get 9/10 right. Thank you grade 7 experience labeling map after map.

Settling In


I'm back home for the rest of the summer months. So far I've spent most of the time in exactly that, my home. We are currently in the process of redecorating parts of our house. My mom and I have lots of projects cooking. My activities at home this summer include going shopping for home things, walking Jack, watching new movies on Netflix, having a wacky sleep schedule, going to the gym, and most importantly trying to do nothing at all.

Unfiltered pile on my desk. I'm in the constant battle of sentimentality (needed to get rid of stuff).
(Today my mom and I started reorganizing our bookshelves. This is the midway point. We took off most of the book covers of the Tom Clancy and Brad Thor books. Who knew such dignified book covers were underneath the plastic sleeves? We've also decided that we need white bookshelves.)


I repainted my bathroom a lovely shade of lilac last summer. Last week I finally found wall decor from Target that works! Once I get the shelves organized I'm going to post more photos.

You could say that I'm settling in, but settling in has also meant changing and redecorating. Now, I think I'll get back to Netflix and call it a night.
